HV Substation Design Approval Engineer (Contract)
Responsibilities
Act as the technical authority for reviewing and approving high-voltage and extra-high-voltage substation design packages.
Ensure primary electrical designs comply with applicable transmission standards, project specifications, and engineering best practice.
Review, verify, and approve engineering drawings, calculations, technical reports, and design documentation before submission.
Lead the delivery of primary plant designs for AIS, GIS, and HV substations throughout the project lifecycle.
Produce and review general arrangement drawings, equipment layouts, section drawings, and associated technical documentation.
Manage design revisions, assess engineering changes, and ensure all modifications are accurately documented and technically justified.
Review vendor documentation and confirm selected equipment is suitable for the intended application.
Participate in technical design reviews, constructability workshops, and engineering risk assessments.
Work closely with multidisciplinary teams including Protection & Control, Civil, Overhead Line, and Cable engineers to ensure coordinated project delivery.
Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers within the design team.
Support engineering assurance activities by responding to technical queries and resolving review comments within agreed timescales.
Promote quality, safety, and compliance throughout all stages of the engineering process.
Ensure engineering solutions align with current UK transmission standards and industry regulations.
Requirements
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Significant experience delivering HV/EHV substation primary design projects within the UK transmission sector.
Previous experience in a Lead Design Engineer, Design Approval, or Technical Authority position.
Strong understanding of transmission substation engineering principles, including AIS and GIS substations.
Experience reviewing and approving engineering drawings, calculations, and technical documentation.
Knowledge of UK transmission network standards and utility engineering requirements.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams across complex infrastructure projects.
Familiarity with engineering change management and formal design review processes.
Working knowledge of relevant UK Health & Safety legislation and safe-by-design principles.
Experience using CAD software, with exposure to 3D modelling or BIM tools considered advantageous.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage internal engineering teams, contractors, and project stakeholders.
